Prospect Democrats' Response
to the Attack  on our Democracy

The events of January 6 are a national tragedy, and the role
the President of the United States played in them is shocking.
On Wednesday, January 13, 232 members of the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Trump for a second time.

While we hope that this is the first step in holding accountable those in power who incited, aided, and encouraged the mob that attempted to subvert the Constitution and overturn a free and fair election, we take no joy in this moment.

The events of January 6 are a national tragedy, and the role the President of the United States played in them is shocking. We applaud the courage shown by the ten Republican representatives who voted for impeachment as well as the steadfast leadership of our Democratic representatives who brought forth and supported this resolution. We hope that those in the Senate will put their country first when the matter comes before them.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the electoral votes were being certified, we were appalled to watch a group of rioters storm the United States Capitol. Minutes before, the sitting President of the United States had addressed a crowd of his supporters and encouraged them to march on the building. The ensuing chaos was violent, disturbing, and very, very dangerous not only to everyone present, but to our very democracy. We are thankful that all of our representatives in Congress are safe and unharmed and that the unrest was put down.

We hope and expect that our national representatives will take action to ensure that there are real consequences for those who incited and participated in storming the Capitol with the intent of derailing the peaceful transition of power.
We watched how law enforcement responded, we remember the response to racial justice protests this past summer, and we see the difference.
We are calling for the prosecution of these rioters to the fullest extent of the law and stern consequences for the members of Congress who lent credence and the weight of their office to the undermining of public confidence in free and fair elections. We were heartened to hear legislators from both parties stand up for this bedrock principle of our nation and our government and demand that the will of the people be obeyed. It was with relief and pride that we watched Congress reconvene and ratify the election, demonstrating the resilience of our democracy.

We must not, however, allow ourselves to become complacent. We call on our state and local legislators to lead by example in denouncing not only the violence, but the stream of divisive rhetoric that preceded it.

These crimes against democracy must not go unanswered.
